Mary Suomala Folkerds, Pastor
My passions in ministry include preaching, memorizing Scripture, digging into tough questions, and finding ways to connect the practices of faith into our homes. I am married to Aaron Suomala Folkerds who is a professor of counseling at the University of Mary (Fargo Campus). We have a son named Paul who is a ball of energy, and a daughter, Helena, who passed away in 2008.
I graduated from Minnesota State University-Moorhead in 2001 with a degree in Russian Studies and Economics. I graduated with a Masters of Divinity degree from the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago in 2007. My husband and I served as co-pastors of a 4-point parish in southern MN for 5 years before coming to Good Shepherd in 2012. Coming to Good Shepherd was a home coming since I grew up in this congregation!
Favorite Bible Story: Luke 24:13-35 (Jesus shows up when and where we least expect him! I keep finding this to be true!)
Fun Fact: I love to travel! I lived in Finland two times – one summer in high school and one year during college. My husband and I also lived in Brazil for a year during seminary. We love traveling to Ireland and we named our yellow lab Dublin!
